What is Shine?
Make-up - hair - nails - deportment - respect -
healthy eating...these are just a few of the issues covered in SHINE.
SHINE is a 9-week course that is designed for high school girls. Facilitated by ladies from New Directions, it is a fantastic way for women to speak into the lives of teenage girls in their local community.
Currently running on a Tuesday, SHINE sees 15 or so girls brought from a local high-school to the Tailrace Centre where they are pampered and loved for one hour.
It's a tough journey sometimes becoming a woman, and it helps to know there are friends on the road too!
BEAUTY + WISDOM + COURAGE = SHINE!!

Shine Feedback from Teacher
(Local Launceston High School)
In 2008 we had a group of grade 8 girls attend the Shine program. They loved every minute of it and I was amazed at the comments from teachers about changes they had seen in their students who were participating in the program.
As the Teacher in Charge of Support at the High School I decided to choose girls to attend the 2009 program who were living in difficult circumstances. I worked alongside the school Chaplain and the grade 7 teachers to choose girls who would really benefit from the nurturing, self esteem and confidence building. They were an eclectic group of girls who had experienced many difficult and challenging realtionships and living situations. By the end of the 9 week program we had seen an increase in their participation at school. We also girls who previously would not have identified themselves as bullies admitting they had a problem and seeking help to rectify and change their behaviour. One of the girls in the group cares for a mentlly ill parent and two brothers who are on ADHD medications. The staff working with her saw her change from being a bully and emerge on the recent grade 7 camp as a nurturer and leader.
Much of the change was with a student who was often absent from school. Her family struggles to provide adequate food and clothing. She loved attending Shine. She cried for a long time after the last session. Her mother told me that she had seen a huge change in her child. That she was not fragile as she used to be and that she was keen to get out of bed and participate in many new things.
We have a new group chosen to attend Shine in Term 2 2009. Thay are grade 8 girls who are talented and invariably overlooked becasue they usually choose to do the right thing and never cause a fuss. Due to the nature of the Shine program I know that this group of girls will also emerge as butterflies from a cocoon.
Thankyou so much to you all.
